WHAT'S THIS, A POST?

Alright, so, i clearly never post in here, and maybe i should. Today is my 20th birthday so i figure it's a good a day as any to start again, eh? To get me back into this, i thought i'd do the 30 Day Challenge. I stole it from petite_robe .

Okay, okay, so my favourite band isn't a band. It's just one person: Regina Spektor.

Sara introduced me to her music a-way back when... 2006 or so, i think. The first song i ever heard of hers was The Consequence of Sound (i couldn't get the video to embed, so here's a link).

And how could i not fall in love with her? Cute little piano rhythms, funny noises, an amazing vocal repertoire (and the balls to use it to its full extent), intelligent--even sometimes profound--lyrics, and, of course, what won me over was "the consonants and vowels". Sold.

Her songs aren't always as fun, of course--they range from pure silliness (mostly songs that have never been produced, like "Reginasaurus" and "Silly Eye Color Generalizations") to intensely deep and haunting ("20 Years of Snow", "Lacrimosa", "Dulce et Decorum est pro Patria Mori"), and everything inbetween. I guess if there's one word i could use to describe Regina, it would be "experimental". Not in the traditional musical genre sense of the word, but experimental in that she is constantly trying out new things to do with her voice, her lyrics, and on the piano--and they're all brilliant.

She never plays a song the same way twice, which is part of what makes going to her concerts such a worthwhile experience. I've seen her twice now, in Toronto in 2007 and 2009. She is incredibly humble and adorably shy (not to mention just adorable in general, with her 5'2" frame, wardrobe of vintage dresses that adorn her like doll's clothes and the way she can open up her mouth to a disproportionately large angle).

Anyway, i'm rambling. The point is, i love her. And she's my longest-lasting music relationship. I never get sick of her.
